hi can anyone tell me. Can branches from a large tree which touch the phone line cause crackling. i have checked filters on all outlets they seem to be ok.
I have this same problem and it is definitely related to humidity. This happens after summertime thunderstorms or extended rainy periods. The outside test jack works fine.

Trees or anything damp etc touching will cause crackling due to the voltage.Clear everything out of the wires and any corrosion around the back of terminal sockets on the walls

Try your phone at a friend or neighbour. If the crackling continues replace the phone.
If the phone is OK, plug it into the Test Socket. (Under the faceplate of the Master Socket.) If the crackling continues the fault is external to you and you should call your land line supplier (BT, Sky, TalkTalk, etc.) to get it fixed.
