A simpler answer for the chainlike noise is that the plastic agitator "dogs" need replacing. It's about $7 for all 4 at Sears.

take the agitator off..at the top of the drum is a casting, into which are two brass tabs that drive the drum..over time the casting wears...and the brass might wear also
