model 420 Stannah Stairlift problem?

Lift goes down then up fine. When it goes to top it stops but won't go back down. If I turn key off then on it will work or if I reach underneath and push middle limit switch and release it will go down too. Is there a specific way/pattern the white plastic contactors must be positioned?

Other problem is beeping.Does this mean battery is not recharging or something else.

Hi
Sold a stannah 420 stairlift. Removed it from the stairs for a dealer to collect. He came, took the covers off the batteries, pushed the foot plate, stuck a screw driver in where the key should go( altho i told him i had the key, he continued) and said the lift was faulty. It was flat as it had been removed from the electricity supply. He wanted it cheaper!! I refused as i knew the lift was in 100 percent working order when removed by our electrition. To cut a long story short we had the lift put back in and is working fine. However since the guy had messed with it, the key wont go in the lock but the lift still works?? Has anyone got any ideas why the key wont go in? Could he have bypassed the lock somehow? I would like the lock to work as i have 2 young children who can now switch it on. Thankyou in advance..

Thought i would add this to help others changing batteries is quite easy , read through before starting a couple of times

Raise chair slightly a few inches if you can unless its stuck somewhere fair enough

1. First turn off charger
2. Turn of key
3. turn off red power switch
4. turn off white main power switch rear of chair you may have to feel for it
5. lower the foot rest remove the plastic cover
6. remove the metal cover
7. behind cover will be wires and three allen key nuts DO NOT TRY AND REMOVE CENTRE ONE
8. Two allen key bolts are one below centre and one right of centre loosen them, the chair will now title left and right, you may need to remove the one on the right or bottom completely to allow more movement if needed, again DONT try and remove centre bolt
9. Remove left side cover by undoing two silver screws
10. remove right hand cover again two silver screws and cover will slide out
11. you may need to tilt chair left and right to get covers off
12. batteries will be revealed
13. NOTE WHERE CABLES GO AS CABLES ARE DONE IN A CERTAIN WAY TAKE A PICTURE IF YOU HAVE TO
14. remove both batterries
15. Install new batterries
16. Refit in reverse order , you may need a small level to level the seat out before doing up allen key bolts

almost forgot batterries you need will cost about £25

any 12v 7ah type average size Dimensions: 151mm in Length, 65mm Width, 95mm high

approximate sizes

Hope this helps

We just installed this model stair lift for my dad. Put new batteries in it. It will only go down then turns off. We did the manual crank and it still will only work going down. Anyone have any idea why?

Looks like the carbon brush is broken off. How does one replace it? Hopefully not difficult. This 420 model only has one brush. Also can you explain the switches in detail? Can't find anything to tell me.I think I have which does what but would rather have someone who knows explain it too.
Thanks

hi there......the white ramps are to determine footrest heights and the nominal distance between ramps is 30mm,however this will vary according to the weight of user and the angle of rail..sometimes like most stairlifts they can overtravel and touch the ultimate limit switch on underside of carriage..which usauly means adjustment should be made to the slowing/stop ramps also the beeping does mean batteries not charging it could be just turned off at the spur supply to charger or another common cause on the 420 model is the buzz bar[copper strip] at the back of the rail needing cleaning also the carbon brush[underside of carriage],this picks up the charge for the batteries any particals of dust gets between these parts will cause the stairlift to bleep..on later models of the 420 stannah fitted two carbon brushes in the carriage so if one brush got dirty the otherone would pick up the charge............hope this will help let me know............ian portsmouth uk

my stirlift was working perfectly then it suddenly stopped working. I pressed the trip switch and there was ai second lighting up of the red power swich light on the wall, so there is power, but it is not reaching the stairlift. Is there a fuse inside the trip switch which may have blown?

Sounds as if it is not getting to the correct park position. Have you only just installed it?
