flat battery?

I need to charge the battery,know where it is,have undone the two screws on the steering column,but can't get the casing off.HELP.The man who has serviced it for years has retired.He told me last year that it's on it's last legs so don't want to spend money on it! TWIN CUT PLUS CASTEL GARDEN SIT ON MOWER bought in 2000.
