rewire ceiling fan?

got a ceiling fan from a friend , he replaced fan switch now it won't turn off, lights work but fan wont turn off , i know he wired all the black wires together and all the white together , it has all three speeds but no off.

three speeds means three windings in the motor. colors may be one white, one black, one red, and one brown. you need a four position pullchain switch. off- speed 1, speed 2, speed 3. the lights usually are a blue wire.
