slow broadband connetion?

If you are using windows goto start > run then type cmd and hit enter. This will take you to the command prompt. Type ipconfig and press return.

Make a note of the Default Gateway address, this will be your routers LAN ip address. Test the connection between your pc and the router by running an extended ping to this address.

ping (i.e 192.168.0.1) -t

make a note of the response times, they should be around 10ms.

Now run an extended ping to the web, i suggest using bbc's web site. Type ping 212.58.224.36 -t and press return. This will do a continuos ping to the bbc and you need to check the time each ping is taking in milliseconds. To end the ping press ctrl-c. Now retry the same test using the domain name (ping www.bbc.co.uk -t). This will test the response via the DNS servers you are using.

You can also run a trace route to see if there are any slow hops as this could highlight a problem. This will show every hop (router) the packet passes through on the way to its destination and the time taken.

If you have a router and can access the config page you should check the connection status. You need to check the Noise Margin and Attenuation levels as these can affect connection. A very low noise margin (below 8.5dB) or high attanuation (over 65dB) can affect service. It will depend though on what flavour of dsl you have, dsl max can tolerate slightly worse readings than IP Stream (ADSL).

Just log on to B.T help and do a speed test and if slow connect the p.c directly to the master socket via your filter and try again.

The 100Mb/s speed you see is only the speed of your ethernet adapter. It represents the speed of the link between your computer and DSL modem. It DOES NOT reperesent the speed of your internet connection. The speed of our internet connection is the speed you indicated to BT you wanted to purchase.

There are a number of speed test sites on the net. However interpreting the results can be a rather complex issue. However here couple of sites you can try to get some idea of what speeds your connection is giving you:

Sign up for a free basic account and try some of the speed tests avaiable. This site isa also a good resource for info about tweaking your TCP/IP stack for better performance. as is:

However a word of caution, tweaking these settings invoves changing/adding registry entries and is not for the faint hearted. If you understand the implications of registry editing and know the precautions you should take when doing so then go ahead. But if not be aware you can make things worse on even render your computer unbootable if you don't know what you are doing.

In any event try the speed tests first before you do anything.

Try turning off pc and disconect modem lead from back of pc. Start pc and reconnect modem.
