My external door handle on 1994 Pontiac Grand Prix doesn't work?

Hi,

The external handle on the driver's side door of my 1994 Pontiac Grand Prix hasn't worked since last winter. Perhaps some freezes caused the problems. The handle is attached and moves normally; however, it no longer opens the door when the door is unlocked. I have to crawl over from the passenger side to open the door with the internal handle.

I am wondering if there is a cable inside the door that detached and it is possible for a lay person to fix it. I fear that if I have to pay a mechanic to take the door apart, it will cost more than it's worth.
