I have fixed a lot of 360's suffering from RROD just by simply replacing the thermal paste between the cpu & gpu and the corresponding heatsinks. Its a very simple and quick fix.

this problem is caused by the pcb warping due to excessive heat which pops the bgas off their pads, breaking the connections. heating the pcb up with a heat gun will only end up damaging other components on the board.
your best bet is to do what goober said and send it back to microsoft. this happend to my 360 and they sent me a new one within two weeks.

Do not try the towel method or any other urban legend. The only way to get it fixed is to send it back to microsoft. They extended their warranty to three years so you shouldn't have a problem sending it in. The only downside is you'll usually wait a month from the time you ship it to them to the time you get it back.

I do know of a way {Un confirmed}
Remove the motherboard and heat it up with a heat gun all over and it helps reset the bad joints on the solder and apparently fixes the issue..
~The other way I've heard about is wrapping it up ina towel for 10 mins to heat it ll up..~
BOTH UNCONFIRMED SO I DO NOT ACCEPT ANY RESPONSIBILITY..
