My Toshiba RD-XS24SB HDD/DVD Video Recorder keeps freezing?

When I try to record onto the HDD the recorder keeps freezing and locking up. This occurs when the record button is used and when the timer recording function is used. It sometimes freezes instantly and can happen any time during the reording. The picture freezes and the only way to reset the unit is to turn off the power supply at the electrical socket. The unit is 2 years old and the hard drive is only half full.

Hi
I found this thread while searching for information about Toshiba DVDR E7061 display. I have had the same problem with a Toshiba RD85-DTSB which I have now solved.
E7061 refers to Complete Hard Drive Failure. I tested my old hard drive on a PC Drive Check it would not even detect the drive.
I asked at the local Toshiba dealers, they were more interested in selling a new unit, than offering any advice on repairs. With this in mind, as the unit was out of guarantee, I opened the case and discovered a standard 3.5" IDE Ultra ATA hard drive installed. I had a spare drive previously formatted for PC files installing this displayed E7036.
I left the problem for some months until I needed to install a more storage space on my PC.
With a new unformatted hard drive, I decided to have another try at the DVDR unit. After reconnecting the DVDR with the new unformatted drive installed, it started and ran to the normal start screen, displaying cannot configure hard drive in a pop up. The drive was then formatted in 'Setup' this can also be done from the options screen in More Settings usually under security settings 'Key symbol'. This set up the drive with its file folders and the unit is now working normally.
There seems to be no point in trying to upgrade with a bigger capacity drive as the unit does not have drive detection and will only set to drive to its production capacity.
This requires only a new (unformatted) 3.5" IDE Ultra ATA Desk Top hard drive (Information for RD85-DTSB; check installed drive of your unit) of same capacity as original and a screwdriver to open the case. Check the jumper settings of the original drive and match them on the replacement, some drive manufacturers use different pin settings, if not on the drive case then check on line for jumper settings for your replacement drive.

I have a problem with a Toshiba RD-XS24SB HDD DVD Recorder.
When I plug in the machine and power it up it keeps coming up with E7061 on the LCD.
It is only 2 years old. Over the two years it has come up with a fault whereby I was not able to record onto the HDD and had to reformat the HDD (losing all recorder content in the process).
In the last three months if the machine was idle to about 5 minutes it locked up (there was no error showing – it just froze). In the last month when trying to play while recording content at the same time it also began to lock up (again there was no error showing – it just froze). These last two problems could be overcome by switching off the power at the socket and switching it on again.
I cannot overcome the latest problem E7061 though and the machine is currently totally useless to me.
I’d be delighted to get any help, even if it is to say that this problem is not fixable and I should get a new HDD recorder.

Hi Mark,
I have exactly the same problem with the same HDD DVD player, mine also freezes when I attempt to use the timeslip feature. The machine is also 2 years old (or thereabouts). Did you find out a solution? I have tried to re-format the drive (which erases eveything stored on it and doesn't work so don't bother) I will keep looking for a fix. If I find anything out I will post you on this site.
