What brand??? If it is an Epson, I had the same experience (on the Stylus c460), and I have searched everywhere for a software that can reset it, but the only thing i have found is that an internal "chip" on the printer will need replaced.

You will have to find a local repair shop if you want to spend the money, otherwise I recycle the printer and buy a new printer (anything but an HP... personal opinion:P)
