how can i fix my whirlpool american fridge freezer?

The freezer temperature on the display panel now flashes on and off as two straight horizontal lines as opposed to the temprature which was set at -18 C. What is the problem? I am unsure of the exact model and have lost the manual. It is an american style fridge freezer. the fridge display remains as before.
