The 'valve' would in fact be a thing called a Thermocouple. This looks like a copper pipe with an odd bulbous end which pokes into, or near, the flame. You'll either need to replace it (and I have no idea where to get one from as I am currently looking myself. Help anyone?) or you have a problem with low gas pressure. Possibly a faulty regulator. It *will* be either one of those two problems..

it would seem that there is a problem with the safety valve. in order for the gass to stay lit there is a heat operated valve which keeps the gas on when hot and switches off when cold.
this might not be opperating due to many reasons. but have a tinker and im sure you figure it out. maybe try cleaning the area well fist and make sure that the thermocouple which is attached to the valve is close to the pilot light.

Try holding in the button for 30 seconds after the pilot light comes on. That should give the sensor time to heat up.
