MK4 Golf Central Locking/Alarm Fault?

Upon pressing the keyfob to lock the doors the alarm sounds. Eventually I manage to silence it (more luck than judgement). I have found the fault is causing a 10a fuse to blow which in turn prevents the electric windows, interior lights and the central locking to function from the keyfob. I can replace the fuse and everything is ok for sometime. I suspect there is water getting into some part of the electrics but thats about the extent of my knowledge.

When i am driving my mk4 golf gti, the doors automatically lock and the alarm goes off, and i have to stop and take the key out of ignition to reset alarm but it locks it self again and alarm goes off again. does anyone know what can be causing this problem.

I had exactly the same fault. My alarm sounded one day unexpectedly after which i had no electric windows, remote central locking (manual key operation worked fine), interior lights, audio alarm when leaving headlights on, heated mirrors and a few other things. I changed my key fob battery (and tried a spare) with no joy. I then checked all of my central locking fuses (see panel diagram and vehicle manual) in the side access panel down the side of the dash near the drivers door, all of which were fine. I then stripped the dash to access the Relays (under the steering column) and did a quick test with a volt meter on them and the green labelled fuse to the bottom right of the relays which was also ok. I then decided (about 3 weeks later) to check ALL of the fuses in the main panel (mentioned above) and found the interior light fuse had blown (small 10A fuse) so replaced this and bingo, all sorted! Sorry for the long winded story but i just want to highlight that you should check EVERY fuse if you have multiple faults like this. Im sure VW would have charged my £150 at least to check this out.

Hi,
My golf tdi has started to develop the same fault, especially when cold!!
The relay under the dash clicks on and off regularly until the car is warm.
Do I need to replace the relay?

Hi! Just had this problem and fixed it. On the relay board which is hidden behind all the plastic in the drivers foot well (under the steering column), is a main fuse for all those circuits (bottom right of the relay board). (My golf is RHD) The fuse is called the "convenience fuse" It has a green label facing you. Take it to your VW dealer and get another. Mine cost £10.05 all in, took two days to arrive and I fitted it today. It really is all sorted. GF says I get favours now because she likes to smoke in the car.

Hope that's not too confusing. Don't normally answer questions on interweb, saw this and though WOW! What a funny coincidence.

Hey Barrie can you talk me through it too please, I'm getting the same fault? I've found it's the cold that's the problem and I can hear a clicking noise like a relay switching (at random intervals) if that helps?!? Cheers.

the best thing to do is send it to an auto electrician. if you want to do it yourself i could talk you through it.
