Maytag LSG 1000 (washer/dryer combo) won't spin?

The machine will spin for about 3 seconds then it displays error code "L". If the door lock switch is the problem, the part will only cost about $11.00. I am not the world's most mechanical person. Is this something I should try to replace myself? If the control board is the problem, the part costs $200+ and I doubt that would be within reach as a do it yourselfer. Would the cost be worth it on a 20 year old machine? Is there a way I can tell if its the switch or the board? I hate give up the machine because it's just the right size for our small household.
