How can I fix my Smeg FAB 28 fridge faulty light switch?

I have had my Smeg fridge for just over a year and the light switch has broken ,I know it is not the bulb ,it use to stay on even when the door was closed now it doesn't come on at all. I have found I can buy a replacement switch but can't find out how easy or how to fit it.If any one could help it would be fantastic.

There are 3 screws:

1 at the back once you take the transparent plastic off
2 underneath the thermostat knob (just pull off)

The light switch/thermostat will then come away, release the plastic back (its obvious) and the switch slides out.

The switch goes bad and theres usually arcing marks visible the switch can be had for a £7 new... but lots of paces selling it for 15-20.... its a generic switch used by many manufacturers.

My brand new Smeg fridge freezer arrived and light and temp display did not work. A week later a 3rd party engineer sorted it. He found a magnet taped to the inside of the panel, where the magnet in the door is intended to strike, so that the door 'thought' it was closed even when open. He removed the unwanted magnet and hey presto. I still have that small magnet as a trophy to sheer stupidity. It could not be there by accident. Oh, and the LED lamp was so starkly white it would give you a headache, so I've put a filament lamp in....much more retro!

My Fab28 is about 6 years old now. About 3 hrs ago the light stopped working but I wasn't really bothered about it, so I ignored it, but about 3 weeks ago I would open it, only to find that the fridge had 'warmed up'. Switching the internal fan on and pushing in the door button revealed that there was just no power reaching the fridge. Out of frustration in slapped the fridge on the side, and hey presto, it came to life again. This has happened about 5 times since, every couple of days. A good sharp slap with the palm of my hand right on the outside opposite where the light unit is does it every time. There is clearly a loose connection or something going on, one day soon I'll open it up and give it a go. One thing is for sure, I'll never buy another SMEG.

purchased a smeg with faulty bulb, replaced the bulb and it made no difference. Applyed pressure to each side of the transparent plastic cover to reveal the bulb, removed screw in top right corner, gently pulled thermosat knob forward and off, revealing two more screws. removed the screws and the thermo/light unit separates from fridge wall. On the front of the unit the plastic piece that moves in and out as you open and the close the fridge door is removed by gently pinching top and bottom and pulling towards yourself. Inside the thermo/light unit you may find a lose connection, or in my case a sticking actuator, that prevented the bulb from comming on....bit of clean up of the connections and it seems to work, but cud be worth buying a new one soon....all in all for smeg not epic build quality...and if i had payed 1500quid for it would have felt massively mugged off!

Got the same prob.

I've looked at the light fitting. removed the light bulb cover and the bulb, and there's a screw there. Unscrewed that, and then attempted to remove the whole lighting/thermostat unit by gentle persuasion. Not been able to yet. That's as far as I've got.

Could have screw fitting going the other way, i.e a pain in the bum if it is.

Or, below/underneath, the thermostat cover, there are three narrow slots, which may allow teasing out the clips. Gonna try that tomorow.

remember: all electrics are repairable. It Just depends how far you choose to go.

Good luck, and keep us all posted.

It's very difficult - they make it that way so you have to order a very expensive man to come out and take an age over it - Smeg are an absolute disgrace - there customer service is non existant and if I had my way no one would ever buy there rubbish again
