many thanks for the advice, i am making progress because i have started the vehicle and no fuel is leaking,
now that i have got is started im hearing a loud noise from the top end of the engine only when the revs slow down or when i ease off the throttle.
if i leave the bike running on the choke, the rev slow down making that noise then cuts out.
thanks for all your help kirsty and caine

U leave fuel in the carbs for a long time(2years)and all the good stuff evaporates leaving behind a kind of jelly.this jelly clogs float valves/main and pilot jets and just about anything it can when u add new fuel.uneed to strip and clean the carbs. The pipe u refer to is the float overflow pipe, there is one for each carb and is connected to nothing.its job is to drain execess fuel away.Buy a haynes manual if u'r doing it yourself,if not then get garage to do it,maybe cost a couple off hours.Next time u store it,switch of fuel at the tank and then start and run till it cuts out.thatway there is no fuel in the float bowl's,no problem.

sounds like a sticking float in 1 of the caburettors float bowl, try tapping the carb float bowls with the handle of a screwdriver, if no luck then the floats and heights will need to be checked. stripdown carb job.
