just put a full bottle of incector cleaner in with a full tank of fuel and new air filter and clean out the engine breather pipes, also use a oil flush, tip in the little can and drive 10 miles ( not high reving ) then chainge the oil and filter,

If you are getting black smoke under accelaration, or after letting off and stepping back on the gas, I would bet its just too much fuel being dumped into the cylinder before the turbo has time to spin back up. Seal rings in the Turbo could be worn out. Its what happend to my 97 cummins. So far my 97 ford only smokes when I start it cold, and when i put it to the wood but i have it set up to do that.

this seems like a common thing in transits as i ve had the same issue. mine smokes a blue/grey in normal driving and under acceleration black smoke but its brief. but i ve also heard of many ways to tackle the problem so it can get confusing...

would agree with MMPuk if the fuel was petrol.diesel confuses the issue.was imprecise.stand corrected.

try using a cenane booster this improves the * rate of the diesel your putting in and keeps the injectors and pcv a bit cleaner as todays diesel fuel is of less * quality than when this engine was developed for, try redex when you fill up for a couple of weeks it normaly does the trick and oil change will help to.

Black smoke isn't burning oil as caine says, burning oil is blue.

Try blanking off the EGR valve.

black smoke on hard acceleration indicates bore/ring wear, comp test.black smoke on overrun and puffs at gear changes indicates valve guide/stem seal wear.oil burning smoke smells just as it sounds.excess fuel from say timing incorrect smells like unburnt diesel and has a more blue/grey colour.I'd do a compression test before anything else.
