How do you activate an external monitor?

My laptop screen has got broken and cannot be used!
When I connect an external monitor the screen message which says no signal dissapears but the screen stays blank.
Is there a setting to switch it on using the function keys as I need to remove data from the hard drive.
Its a fujitsu siemens amilo

I think it's usually Function Key (Fn) and F8 at the same time.

I think it cycles:- Built In Screen /External Monitor / Both Screen & Monitor but on any machine I've tried to do this on it seems to have a mind of its own and an annoying delay before anything actually changes. Most probably impatience and Operator Error in my case.
