camera dropped in water?

i went cycling and it rained. and my nikon D5000 dslr is now not functioning, the screen has fogged up, and unable to power up. memory stick is fine though. i'm screwed. most likely sending it for servicing, what's the cost? and will it ever be back to normal?

Take the camera apart as much as possible, open all connection covers and batery door, etc., if possible, extend the lense and pull the battery out with it extended. If the camera has a seperate clock/settings battery, remove it too. Then put it in an airtight container of instant rice and store at room temperature or warmer for a few days at least, the longer it's in there the better chance it has of working. works well for many other electronics too.

I dropped my camera in water and it was only submerged for a second. I immediately removed the battery and memory card and put it in front of a fan for several hours. I then turned it on but the picture was blurry, so on the advice from someone else, I put it in a bag with rice and let it sit overnite. I turned it on today and the picture is better but still not as clear as it used to be, so I put it back in the bag of rice and am now crossing my fingers, hoping that after a few more hours I continue to see improvement. It's quite devastating when this happens, so maybe there is a little comfort in that others have been through the same thing.

Possibly your camera still has some water or moisture on the circuit that controls the focus or on the detector. You need to drive out all the water. To do this the camera must be placed in a low humidity location. using the hair dryer may work but what I have done with cell phones is to put them on the dash board of my car for an afternoon. so this may also work with the camera but be careful that it doesn't get to hot and start melting the plastic. It going to depend on what type of materials the camera's made out of as to how hot you can get it before it might be damaged. I wouldn't go above 120 to 135 deg F.

i just swam with my camera fuji finepix by mistake and have let it dry for a day now hope it works.The memory stick is fine though

normally with any enclosed electronic device, such as a camera, after being dropped in water immediately(or as soon as possible) opening the product and drying it manually as mentioned before can possibly fix it. however if the water has seeped into the circuits and such, (say u were just waiting on it to fix itself) the product would probably be ruined. - i know this doesnt help if ur camera is screwed, but maybe it will help for the next time (cell phone maybe?)-

after i dropped mine in some water, i opened it up and used a blowdryer on it for about 30 minutes. the water was gone, the screen cleared up, and i was able to use the camera again

mate i don't know but i sure as hell hope so cuz i just dropped my Nikion coolpix4200 in a drain and fished it out. lights are on but no ones home. just hope it perks up as well as yours did!
