My hotpoint dryer only dryes when I hold the knob to turn on for drying. When I let got of the knob it stops drying any ideas as to why. did I disconnect a wire when I changed the belt to the dryer?

The "Red Button" described below on the thermostat is actually a blob of paint that probably serves as a "Tell-Tale" indicator to prove to anyone if the thermostat has been reset before. Mine now has so there is no red blob there anymore, just a hole, and this could be the case with yours. All I did to reset it was use a small instrument screw driver which broke through the original red blob and operated the reset mechanism underneath it.

I followed the advice about resetting the thermostat, and that finally cured my snag after I had to dismantle and clean the circulating motor, which I think had seized due to infrequent use. I would recommend checking this item too in cases like this to see if it is the root cause for the thermostat tripping out.

mine is the same model and had the same fault, the thermostat is the most likely fault. the thermostat is found on the top of the driers metal housing at the end of the housing nearest the door.some are with a red dot in the centre, between two blue wires, one has a black plastic sleeve and the other is a exposed metal connector ( wires are conected on the top, note down the position of the wires ). pushing a small pin into the red dot until a 'click' is heard will reset the thermostat and the machine should work as normal. make sure the power is off and unplugged when doing this. if it doesnt work then a new thermostat will be needed they are between 7 and 10 pounds. fairly easy to fit but you will need star bits to remove the housing and take care not drop the screws into the machine.

It's probably the thermostat. They're only about £6-10 to buy (http://shop.ezee-fix.co.uk/) but it's a bit tricky to get in and replace it. Mine is always going and I'm sick of replacing it.
I suspect a fault or blockage casuses over heating which then blows the thermostat. Hope this helps.
