no but they can be a real pain, loosen nut on heater and prise out (try a claw hammer).sometimes the rubber seal on the heater swells up making it almost impossible, if you find this to be the case, remove sump hose from tub and using a screwdriver try and separate the rubber from the plate. it will come out
