Have managed to get rid of the flashing on/off and time saver lights now by putting the machine on a fast spin cycle and letting it finish. Read this somewhere else on the internet, but can't find the site again. Anyway its worked just fine, think its related to the machine possibly needing to complete the cycle it faulted on - from memory I think the manual suggests something similar if the settings get changed mid cycle. Anyway no more fault! Have managed to get the damn thing to wash the clothes by disconnecting the earth lead from the drier heater element casing, so the rcd no longer sees the earth fault. Definitely not a long-term solution - new heater element arriving on Tuesday - ÂŁ25, a lot of messing about, but that should be it. Hope this helps at least one other person!
