'93 Escort Estate 1.8 Diesel Starting/Fuelling problem??

Escort diesel is nigh on impossible to start, occasionally runs then cuts out after a few seconds then won't attempt run again for a good while.

Injection pump has been replaced , timing reset correctly but fuel supply seems erratic. Not one of Lucas CAV pump systems but Bosch system, so no leaking diaphragm issues but very similar problem.

Are there any obvious places to check for splits or other known issues? I'm sure it's getting air from somewhere that's preventing it pulling fuel through.
