WHY DOES OUR LEGEND AD GAS FIRE SWITCH ITSELF OFF?

We have a Legend AD gas fire which switches itself off every time we open the door to the kitchen. It's as though opening the door creates a vacuum. It even switches itself off when the fire has been on for any length of time. It was fine until approx. 2 months ago when this happened periodically but now it happes all the time. Does this type of fire have a built in thermostat? The click when it switches off is clearly audible. Also the pilot light is always yellow. Any ideas what could be wrong with the fire?

Thanks for your help Peccavi. We will get the burner serviced. As for having a CO detector, you should get one or three. I wouldn't feel comfortable without one. Or is that the way I have now been conditioned? :-)

Best wishes

I am not an expert in this field - or any other field come to that! My concern was for your safety and the yellow flame rang alarm bells. I am all out of ideas but do add this from wikiAnswers..

If you are burning natural gas, it means that the burner is dirty and not getting anough air. If left untreated it will lead to sooting and possibly carbon monoxide problems. Get the burner serviced immediately. If you are burning propane gas, there will be a yellow "tip" to the flame, this is a normal condition. The flame should not be all yellow however, this indicates the same problem as with natural gas.

I think if you "fix" the yellow flame you probably fix the fire turning off problem. Nice to know you have a CO detector.. I should get one... Good luck...

Thanks for your quick response Peccavi.

We have a brand new Kidde Carbon Monoxide alarm in the living room. We have checked this today to make sure it is working correctly and it is. This alarm doesn't go off when the gas fire is on so I assume that Carbon Monoxide is not the problem. We also have other alarms around the house which don't go off either.

Is it possible that the Atmospheric Sensor is blocked as we have three cats and a dog who is moulting badly.

Thanks for your time.

Do a bit of private research on Carbon Monoxide Poisoning - One symptom is a yellow flame - the next thing you know you're dead -

Modern gas fires have an oxygen depletion sensor - I think yours is shutting the fire off because of poison gas in the room... Do you have adequate ventilation?

The opening of the kitchen door is probably stiring up a pool of carbon monoxide gas and flooding the oxygen sensor.

This from Wikipedia...

An Oxygen Depletion Sensor (O.D.S.) detects when oxygen levels in the room fall below a specified level and cause the pilot flame to lift away from the sensing probe. This activates the Flame Supervision Device, which cuts off the gas supply inside the valve and renders the appliance safe.
