my fiat punto 04 has just started to over heat why?

my fiat punto 04 has just started to over heat nothing seems to be hot and they is no smoke why is the gauge going up quick

iv had a couple of puntos and they both had over heating probs i found the thermostat sticks shut or if not spotted in time the head gasket blows and when one of ours went it didnt even smoke much to start with so we didnt know till too late !if no heat coming from car heater its a sign.Both of ours used loads of oil and water almost from new !

just a guess but did it start doing it in the extreme cold? my m8 had the same problem and turned out he has no antifreeze and froze the block so would be a good idea to test that ,
