Can I mend a faulty reversing light myself?

I tried to clean a corroded reversing light socket with the power still on and got some sparks and then nothing. Has the fuse blown and can I change the fuse myself? I have a Ford Focus Zetec 1800cc Hatchback year of manufacture 2000. I am thinking of going to a scrap yard and getting a replacement socket and just cutting the old one off and fitting a replacent using electical connectors.
