how to assemble torsion spring on to pivot shaft/control arm?

i have mtd yardman self propelled lawnmower YM 6021E model number 12AE389E643 my problem is with the torsion spring that fits around the pivot shaft and returns the control arm assy to no neutral, the original spring has a broken lug and i am trying to fit new spring but it can fit so many ways does anybody out there know which way it fits. The spring part number is 732-0807 I have some good photos but don't know how to post to this question
