I have had the same problem the last few months untill it would not start at all last night.
Did all the checks & cleaning stated here. Decided to take the battery tray out and noticed the negative/earth lead to the battery wasn't connected to the clutch housing (severely corroded) and a small earth lead from underneath the battery tray to the block had snapped off.
Redone both connections and car started straight away! It's still early days but its looking good and worth checking.

Hi...had the same problem. Started about a month ago and was doing the same routine of opening and closing a few times before it started. Last week,it got worse and was taking forever to finally start.Got on this site and did what some of you have done namely undo the battery, took all the fuses out and scraped them clean with a screwdriver, undid two screws under the steering wheel and pushed all wires I could see in before putting the battery cables back on(whole process took about 30 minutes ).Car started fine and haven't had any issues for 4 days.Haven't put the radio code on though. Doing it these weekend.

Hi
I have an Nissan almera 2005 model, same like u all I also has immobiliser problem. I went to Nissan showroom, they said it costs around 400 euros. Moreover, I met a person who could do all the electric works in car. So I just wanted to know tht whether the Nissan can fix my problem or do I go and fix with the private person. Please give some opinion

We have same problem as here but the starter motor turns but no engine start. Not sure if that is the same problem? What I mean is if the immobilser is ON does the starter motor turn?

Just to add to the list - my Nissan Almera Tino 1.8S 2004 has done the same: Green 'Secure' message for a couple of days and radio stops working. Came out one morning and car will not start. All systems working and immobilizer light goes out but engine will not start.
Reset keys, recharged battery, left it disconnected for 2 hours, and tried wiggling keys. Removed steering wheel column cover and played with wiring. So far nothing. Going to try and remove immobilizer for good next...

HI

I have a 2033 Nissan Fare that had similar problebs and they are well known

1. Often the car would not start although it would unlock. I took it too an auto electrian after being quoted over £200 by Nissan.

He resoldered the joints that had dried behind the steering wheel..Cost £25

2. Just recently my fob has been sparadic in opening the car but okay to start the car. Took it to local locksmith who does car keys..Battery okay. It's method I couldn't quite keep up with but...ignition on and off 6 times and the lights stays on..Immediately with the key in the ignition still, he held in the buttons and hey presto all working perfect. Cost...give me a fiver it took him about 1 minute

Almera's are known for these problems but all mine are now fixed for £30. Nissan would have cost me easily £250.

PS ...keys are £175 from Nissan. Locksmith did me extra genuine key all coded in for £130. I now have three keys

Had a similar problem for years which got worse over the past year with imobiliser not turning off and having to lock and unlock the car many times. After reading several posts about wiring problems I removed the steering wheel covers (four screws) and wiggled all the connectors, especially the ones to the key lock so as to try to rub the mating parts together and cut through any dirt and oxidation. 5 weeks and counting - not a single problem with car starting every time.

after starting problems on my 03 Almera i followed the advice about disconnecting the battery earth lead and cleaned it. i waited 2 hours before connecting it again. the car started every time over the next 2 days until i paid for and put in the radio code. now the starting problem has appeared again. it looks like going through the radio is causing a problem so i will go through the same routine but leave the radio alone and see how it goes.

I've had the same problem for a couple of months now. some times it will start but the immobiliser light stays on other times light on and wont start and on odd occasions it wont start but no light off. I usually just lock and unlock doors and it works 80% of the time straight away. sometimes just pressing unlock solves it. it does seem to be getting worse and happening more often. I need to find a solution to this.
Does Anyone know how to disable the immobiliser completely.

I changed the battery as it was struggling to start over a few days and then died completely after being left over a weekend. After the replacement all electrics worked but the engine wouldn't turn over, it just clicked. There was no immobiliser warning or messages on the screen. I tried a few of the things on this forum but it turned out to be a broken battery earth cable where it attaches to the gearbox under the car. I removed the cable (easier with the battery tray removed) then had a new lug attached to the end. Total cost £1.50. phew!

Hi,
I had all the immobiliser problems mentioned with a 2003 Almera. Garage charged me £54, all to no avail. Then noticed that the battery was not of the recommended capacity, someone had fitted a cheapie! But just to say also that the battery had always turned the starter motor over with considerable gusto and never sounded suspect. In desperation I fitted a new battery of recommended capacity and for the past two weeks all has been fine! Worth a try if you are having similar problems.

Not an answer but I had the same problem 2 years ago. Nissan charged £90 and ok for 2 weeks then really let me down, had to be picked up and Nissan charged me nearly £400 for new immobliser, problem just started again, they did a free diagnostic and say now it's the wiring harness and can put right for £180. I asked if common problem and could it be damp, they of course said no. Can anyone say does the almera have a number of harnesses or which one is it likely to be. Appreciate any help

I had the same problem a few years ago - flashing immobiliser and the car wouldn't start without a lot of messing about. An Auto electrician charged me over £100 to fix it and it was ok for six weeks but then it started again. I removed the lower dash and sprayed the immobiliser module (about the size of a credit card) with ACF 50. The problem didn't recur for years - until today! I am going to spray it again tomorrow and see what happens. I concluded the module was getting damp.

I have had problems with my 2004 Almera SXE sometimes not turning over when I turn the key and on one occasion the immobiliser light stayed on when the engine was running.
I noticed it seemed to be one key not the other so I have just replaced both key fob batteries for £1.50 and so far no problems for the last three weeks.
I hope it is as simple as that.

the problem here is that the loom from the aerial at the key takes too long a route to the control box and signals get interfered with trick is to shorten the route using orignal loom (with great care)

can i just thank you all for all your opinions - i too have had real bad trouble with my 04 almera - got so bad it didnt start since last thursday - i took most of your recomendations at hand - took earth wire off battery sanded all connections on battery used wd 40 on every electrical applicance that i could find removed every fuse cleaned used wd 40 again on every space in fuse box - used wd 40 on starter engine - replaced every fuse back into fuse box when it had dried out - put on steering lock - left everting for 2/3 hours reconnected fuses and battery and started car - perfectly - most people on this site have the roght attitude its not your keys so dont PAY to get them re/chipped and its nut your imobilisser either its a wiring problem which u can fix yourself - please do and thank you all for your help

Hi I have a Nissan 2006 Almera,

Every second day it starts, the other just turns over, have followed every instruction on both disabling immobiliser, and trying to reset .... including spent a fortune and still sits in the garage.

Please Help, it would be so appreciated, as on my own in the wilds of Africa, and only mode of getting around at the moment

Disconnect battery at earth side leave off for at least 2 hours and clean all earths leads rub off any rust with emery cloth or wet or dry abrasive paper .you can see when done smear with vaseline. Clean the fuses in the fuse box next to the battery and spray fuse box with wd40 before refitting fuses. Also one at a time remove any censors fittings clean and spray with wd 40 and refit .also clean the coil fittings one at a time .Then refit battery earth lead to battery smear with vaseline to stop any further corrosion . This should have now cleared and reset the immobiliser and you problem should be resolved. It worked on my 04 Almera and I have had no trouble since

Same issue here with my 03 almera. Suspecting a dodgy connection somewhere in the loom as it fails to start every now and again. Anyone have any links to howto docs to fix or bypass? Ta.

I have a Nissan Almera 2004 and the red immobilser light stays on and the car wont start. Sometimes it tries to start, and again I know its the immobiliser as Nissans always start first time. I have replaced my key battery, for a few days I thought I had cured the problem, but no. What I usually do, is switch it all off, wait a few seconds, waggle the stearing wheel, putting it on the stearing lock and releasing it again etc. Eventually it works. I took it into my main dealer today and guess what it, is the wiring loom like so many others. It will cost me £190.00 to get repaired and is going in next week. I did mention to them about so many people having the same problem. They said they were aware many people had this problem, but apparently there wasnt enough people effected for Nissan to do a recall. Shame eh?

Update on my problem. Took the car to the local Nissan dealer. They kept it all day and say they can't find anything wrong with it :-( - they said there is a possibility that something needed replacing but it costs £200 + labout and they didn't want to spend my money unless they were sure. I hope it is just a fluke.

I have the same problem on my 2004 Almera Tino SVE. It has only started happening since it was serviced lat month. They told me to take the key out, get out of the car, lock it and leave it for a full minute, then try again. It seems with mine, sometimes the engine turns and other times nothing. I hope they don't charge me!

hello i have got a almera 1.5s on a 2003 plate the problem lies with the steering control. The ignition harness was loose on mine so everytime i had problems with the starting the car i always moved the key in the ignition switch this was the problem. I rang the dealers they quoted me nearly £200 for rebolting the ignition harness. So i just opened the 2screws at bottom of steering wheel n got some ties n tied the harness tight. It then started.

I have a Nissan Almera S Sep 2003 reg.
My immobliliser from time to time would not allow me to start my car.
It started last Summer and after a trip to the dealer they reset my keys. The problem started again and the dealer identified the problem and i had to have my loom replaced. £200 bill. I hope its now fixed for good.

Bought a 2004 Nissan Almera tino recently. Had immobiliser problem ie flashing immobiliser light and engine not starting off and on. Car went to widnes nissan centre and nats card read, immobiliser loom wiring repaired and repositioned (in drivers door) as too tight. Got the impression this is common fault++. Bill was £70. Car fine now.

i just had that same problem, where you get a secure message on your display and the radio wont work. it unlock/locks ok but seems to be immobilized. the RAC man i called out just bump started it successfully and said that it prove the immobilizer was not the cause and most lightly was the starter motor. i had the garage replace it and its all working again now including the radio. mine is also a 2004 SE model. i got charged £320 all in for it. don't know if i was stung on the price or not.
hope this helps

Barry
April 2009
Seems to be a common fault with nissan Almeria and Tino. You will probably be fine for a while and get to car to start by closing and opening the doors etc and taking the key out etc .
Problem start if you get a secure message on your display . You can try a key reset as many suggest but this probably will not work and then its normally a trip to the dealer, get the cheque book out! some will really spin a yarn and charge you for it .
