Anyway to fix disc error message on dvd recorder?

RCA VHS/DVD Recorder. When new disc (any brand DVD+R/RW) inserted, will not format or record...always says disc problem, won't eject & locks up player, Have to unplug & replug to get disc out. Any answers?
