How can I re-condition my speaker cones (mission 707) loudspeakers?

I have a pair of 1989 Mission 707 loud speakers. The large cones have perished around the outside edge and are starting to break up. I think it's soft foam/rubber, (polypropylene?). The more I use the speakers the more the ring disintegrates. I know there are some companies in the USA who do a mail and return repair service, but none of them will take orders from overseas because of the shipping costs for heavy speakers.

Replacement cones are no longer available from Mission, and the alternatives are not the same. I want to keep the original cones if I can because I love the sound of these speakers and they should have many years use left in them.

I am in the UK and would like to hear from anyone who has solved this problem, or knows where I might get the cones re-conditioned.

FIRST... Stop playing them. The edging is critical in maintaining coil alignment. Coil rubbing is very bad and can quickily lead to coil damage, crossover damage and amplifier/receiver damage.

Next, Can you remove the woofer drivers? Tie a knot on the wire connected to the red (or +) terminal. Mail the woofers themselves instead.

There is a shop in Los Angeles, California called "Solutions" formely known as "Speaker Repair of California". The shop is one of the oldest. They have been repairing speakers since 1939 and they are one of the best. (323)666-4161. Call them for an estimate and recommendation. Make sure the system is worth the effort and cost.

Wembley Loudspeaker are still in business and are about to fix my late '80s 707s for around £50 +VAT for the pair. They've moved though, and can be found in Acton. Web site's here: http://www.wembleyloudspeaker.com/

Just saw your question and i had the same problem, I went to a place in Sheperds Bush, London, called Wembley Loudspeakers. cost about £50 for the pair and took a few days. call them on 02087434567 you can send them but i preferred to drop off and pick up. They look and sound good as new. dont run them any more if the rubber is going as this may damage the coil and cone base! Hope you get this and continue to enjoy these great classic speakers. Boom Boom!
