BRIGGS@STRATTON 12HP?

I have a 12 HP motor on a Murray riding mower, it started backfiring and is very hard to start and after it does start it runs very rough, what do you think is wrong with it and how do you fix the problem?

Hey I,m having the same problem as Bill. Found this and was wondering what the fix was.Removed the motor from the mower. I could back it up all I wanted. Could turn foward some before it would catch. Any help, can it be repaired

we have had problems like this before some of things we had found are a loose magneto and sticking to flywheel magnets.connecting rod tight on crank shaft or where the crankshaft goes through the block it is scarred up. valve setting to loose causing valve not to open far enough.make sure it is the engine and not a stuck pulley.make sure you have oil in the engine also check to make sure the gas did not leak into engine this a very common problem.also we did have some problems with the harmonic balancer rod breaking or scared bearing journals(if your engine has one)
