promblem with brother model number mfc-8500 fax machine?

I have a brother fax machine # mfc-8500 .when I plug it in . it tells me that the pls open cover .the machine will not go back to the date and time. the book said check to see if paper is jam in the machine .there nothing in there . I tryed to unpluging the machine and plug it back in about 10 times that did not work so what could be wrong with it . can somebody let me know how to fix it .and also it gives me and error code 71 thanks my name is Anthony.
