In my case, I pulled the two rods apart, took the plastic ends off and fed the smaller rod back thorugh the larger one, while trailing the spring and washer behind. I put the plastic ends back on and adjusted the length as required.

I have just managed to put mine back together: the secret (if yours is the same type as mine) is not to force the pole with the spring into the other pole, but to gently 'jiggle' it down. (This appears to release the oval 'washer' that sits on top of the plastic base and stops it jamming in the pole.)
