Many thanks - where exactly are the sliding pins located and what diameter are they?

The caliper is mounted on a sliding pin system it should enable the caliper to slide so that the pads wear evenly, it sounds like your caliper has seized on the pins, you will need to free them off with WD40 or similar (avoiding getting any on the disc's!!!) then when they are free coat them in copperslip anti-seize paste

the front brakes on a saxo are a single piston sliding caliper design,
the sliding caliper has seized up due to dust/rust give it a lever with a old screwdriver or flat bar till it slides easily by hand, may need to strip down clean and re-grease the slide pins check if rubbers gaiters are split on the caliper slides
