John Deere (1986?) 4.5 hp ohv when you pull the throttle back to slow engine it stalls. What needs adjusted or replaced?

Either set the pilot mixture screw to 1 turn out, or adjust the fast idle screw that controls the tickover speed. If neither of these have any effect, the carburettor needs to be stripped and cleaned.
