my wifes mk 4 golf holding back on power please help?

hi all i hve just bought my wife a mk 4 golf avantgarde cabriolet 2.0 (2001 y)and when driving it seems to be holding back on the power it seems to splutter(very slightly)hopeing i aint bought a lemon any help or dvise greatly appreciated
