Thank you! There was masses of thread wrapped around the drain pump impellor (or what I assume is the d... p... i... - my instruction manual has gone AWOL). The filter is self-clean and it just doesn't enter my head to check it from time to time or on this occasion ... duh. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!

remove the filter and clean it out.shine a torch in to the filter housing and check if the drain pump impellor rotates freely
