ford fiesta speedo?

i have a ford fiesta 2003 1.4 zetec petrol, my speedo keeps working on and off, and on occasions i lose everything milage ect. when the speedo stops working the car reacts funny and drives complety different. does anyone know why and what to do to fix it?
