Had the same problem - the top ring is supposed to unscrew (but mine does not), I gently twisted the lid to get to the internals........damn wont ever put one of these in my house.

Chris (April 2011) -- your advice was a lifesaver - I have inserted your useful tip below because the advice was so useful. Have a whole bunch of family arriving soon for a 70th birthday and your advice here saved the day. Now two operating toilets in the house.
RE: REMOVING CISTERN LID FROM VISTA AVALON toilet (thanks to Chris advice below 2011).
if it is a dual-flush system (so there's a large button and a small button), you push the large button down, and while it's down use a flat head screw driver to pop the small button out, then do the same for the large button (using the space where the small button was to lever the big button out) and then you use the screw driver to unscrew the screw at the bottom holding the ring in place and then you can remove the cistern

Thanks Chris! These cisterns are obviously designed to keep plumbers in jobs. They have the most obscure lid access imaginable but once you know the trick it's easy. Ironic that once you get the first button out there is an arrow and the word "service"! That's fine if you know how to get the button out!

Had the same problem - the top ring is supposed to unscrew (but mine does not), I had to remove the whole toilet, and I think I broke it in the process. My toilet had multiple leaks - wont buy this brand again.

I know this reply is years later but I just spent 25mins searching for the answer to this very question for the toilet in the en suite for my house.

The answer is: if it is a dual-flush system (so there's a large button and a small button), you push the large button down, and while it's down use a flat head screw driver to pop the small button out, then do the same for the large button (using the space where the small button was to lever the big button out) and then you use the screw driver to unscrew the screw at the bottom holding the ring in place and then you can remove the cistern
