Delonghi ECO310.B filter holder plastic bit?

Hello I have bought this Model and you know in the filter holder the black plactic bits that fit into the filter holder,(says open on the bottom) when making coffee do i need to remove these plastics bits or keep them on? I have been baffled about this all day! I have tried making coffee with them plastics bits on and off which is the best way??

I think the black plastic bits (which the machine is supplied with) are supposed to remain where they are. They are removable for cleaning.
