How can I e-mail avi files?

I would like to e-mail avi files. If I make avi files with my webcam it compresses them into wmv files which are small enough to e-mail. What about other avi files? Is there an easy way to make these into wmv files so that I can e-mail them?

(I use Windows XP and Outlook 2000)
