how can i remove oil filter housing on vauxhall vecta?

I am having problems removing the oil filter housing on a 1999 Vectra 2.5 V6. It is the paper type filter. I have slackened the cover and its hand loose but it wont come off. I have tried to re-tighten it but that doesnt work either. There is a clear gap between the filter housing and the engine block.
