I've just had the same problem with my Ariston AL1250CT. On removing the control circuit board, I immediately noticed a faulty dot weld with black surround, exactly as described by Max. I was able to re-solder it, and the machine is now working perfectly again.

The problem was caused by a open dry joint on the control circuit board - identified by a black surround of a dot weld.
