how do i tell if my engine fan is working?

i had my ford fiesta 03plate 1.3, running in my drive to night and i realised there was a lot of steam coming from the grill, i have never seen this before, but i didnt notice if the engine fan was working, is this normall? i took the car for a 5min spin and the engine temp did not rise, but when i got home again the fan was not on. do you think theres a problem?
