how do I clean the pump filter on a Hotpoint WM61?

How do I clean the water pump filter on a Hotpoint WM61? My clothes are coming out with little bits of gritty grey yuck on them, I'm assuming it is the filter but I can't find the thing, my old machine had a handy little flap which hid it nicely :(
