How to get my DVD remote to work when set up is pressed?

I have a DBDVR01 model. Only 30 months old, rarely used. VCR tape now chews up so cannot use. Trying now to use the DVD recorder (only used it 2 or 3 times to record (2 years ago). Have the correct DVD RW discs for Duranbrand model. The set-up button on the handset does not appear to work anymore and cannot get any menus to work on the TV when i press it. Batteries are ok and other buttons are working, so i cannot use the recorder at all. Help, how can i get to use it?
