tumble dryer awz541/3?

Hi my Whirlpool tumble dryer (AWZ541/3) is not heating when tumbling. i think the stat has broken, what/how do i replace it. do i need to remove the top of the dryer or the back panel. neither are easy to get off as i tried last night to remove them, i dont want to force them incase i damage the dryer even more. can you instruct what i need to do.
