changing to combi?

My conventional Potterton boiler is over 15yrs old and British Gas want over £3,000 to change it.
I'm now thinking of a combi and getting rid of the hotwater tank currently feed out hot water system, as its showing signs of leaking. Is anything I can use to seal the hot outlet feed nut against the tank while its wet? temp of course.
What would a fare price be for.
(a) Just changing the airingcupboard hot water tank.?
(b) Changing to a combi boiler removing the hot water tank?
B/Gas want Close to £4,000 just to change the boiler with little sweetner discounts of up to £300 with the £300 for over 60's discounts.
Many thanks

A combi is not good for running a bath - takes a long time esp in winter - with no hot water tank you have no immersion heater back-up in the event of the boiler failing - a combi is a little more complex than a conventional boiler and consequently more prone to failure.

British Gas tend to be expensive from what I can gather on here.

There may be an issue with running a new gas supply pipe to any new boiler of any type - the current regulations call for a 22mm pipe but many older boilers had the gas arriving in a 15mm pipe.

It would be sensible to change the tank and the boiler at the same time - call in a couple of independent specialists for alternative quotations - BG tend to "up-sell" and tell scary tales.
