Mend Sears 70 Series Washer Water Fills

washer continues to run water into tub but never fills?

on my washer (on any switch setting except one..."normal") the water runs constantly and thw washer doesn't fill up. it runs for hours and hours on end. Is it the main switch / timer that is not working right? it is a sears 70 series heavy duty. i do not have a model #, but it was purchased in 1997, if the date helps.
