DVD PLAYER?

can any one please help , I'm trying to put my family videos on dvd's but when I have burnt them onto a dvd they wont work on my living roon dvd player , is there a special format they have to be burnt to (if so could you tell me which one) the dvd works ok when i put it back into my pc though.
